Rock Art Foundation Adventure Tour
Curly Tail Panther on the Devils River
Feb 4, 2012

Come join a Rock Art Foundation guide for an adventure tour to Curly Tail Panther. Located high on a cliff above the Devils River this tour takes you to a site that truly emphasizes "place" in the rock art of the ancient people who created the paintings.

This tour is not for the faint of heart or anyone who has difficult traversing rugged terrain and narrow ledges. The hike is short, but difficult. This is not rock climbing, but does require stamina and balance to walk a narrow rock ledge leading to the site. At "the ledge" almost everyone stops and a few just won’t go on. At this point you are within sight of the rock art.

Please keep in mind that you will be in a remote location where response to serious injuries and medical emergencies will be difficult and lengthy. Please be physically prepared for this hike.

On the morning of the tour meet your guide at 9:30 AM just west of Del Rio, Texas, at the store/gas station/café at the intersection of Hwy 90 and Hwy 277/377. No special vehicle is needed for this tour. Any car can drive to the parking area above the rock art site. Once we leave the meeting site there are no conveniences. Bring food and water. No pets.

This tour will be strictly limited to fifteen (15) participants.

The requested donation for this tour is $35 per person. All Rock Art Foundation tours must be paid in advance to insure your reservation. Please make your reservations no later than 7 days prior to tour date by giving us your payment instructions at http://www.fellowpages.org/rockart/tours.cfm . You will receive a payment/reservation confirmation. Last minute reservations and walk-on’s can only be accepted depending on available tour space. Only those paid in advance are guaranteed a place on the tour. Cancellations with a full refund are accepted no later than 7 days prior to the tour. Cancellations on the part of the RAF or weather will be refunded in full – most tours are cancelled in the event of rain. An on-call list will be kept for tours which fill up and you will be notified of openings in order of your inquiry. Payment can also be made by check sent to The Rock Art Foundation, P.O. Box 702052, San Antonio, TX, 78270-2052.

Rock Art Foundation Tour
Bonfire Shelter and Eagle Cave
Saturday, February 18, 2012

In the archaeological record of events occurring in the lower Pecos River area perhaps none are more important than the buffalo stampedes manipulated by early hunters in a narrow canyon near the present day town of Langtry. This site, once known as Ice Box Cave, is today called Bonfire Shelter. The Rock Art Foundation in cooperation with the local landowner invites you to tour this unique site.

Come join RAF guide Jim Sievers to learn more about the name of this shelter, the ancient people who lived here, and to visit other sites within the canyon. The landowner has been known on occasion to join this tour and to impart his intimate knowledge of this fascinating place to visitors.

This tour is only available to 25 current members of the Rock Art Foundation.

Meet your guide in the parking lot of Seminole Canyon State Park at 9:30 AM and be prepared for a prompt 10:00 AM departure. The tour should complete by 4PM. Any vehicle can travel to the site parking area. Bring your lunch and drinking water. Wear sturdy shoes and dress in layers according to the weather. The hike is into a very steep and rough canyon. Stamina, agility, and good balance are a must. You will be in a remote location where response to serious injuries and medical emergencies will be difficult and lengthy. Children must be fully mobile and able to travel this terrain on their own. No pets.

For more information about Bonfire Shelter visit the Texas Beyond History website at http://www.texasbeyondhistory.net/bonfire/index.html.
